Rediscovering Thoubal District

Thoubal is one of the 16 districts of Manipur occupying the bigger portion of the eastern half of Manipur valley. It is bounded on the North by Imphal West and Imphal East district, on the East by Kangpokpi and Tengnoupal districts, on the South by Kakching and Tengnoupal districts.

Sangai Festival – It’s only getting bigger and better!

Sangai Festival, the biggest annual cultural festival organized by Department of Tourism, Manipur is celebrated for 10 days every year in the fall of November in Imphal, the capital city of Manipur, with the finest aspiration to uphold Manipur as a world-class tourism destination staging the best of its art and culture, handloom and handicrafts, indigenous sports and various other traditional activities. This year the festival has shortened to only a week – from the 24th till 30th of November but has been expanded to other districts such as Bishnupur and Senapati keeping in view with the increasing number of visitors.

SHIRUI LILY FESTIVAL – Celebrating and promoting the flower that grows only in Manipur

Blooming at the top of Shirui Hills, Shirui Lily brings in the people of Manipur together with its enchanting beauty and its annual observation, Shirui Lily Festival. Shirui Lily, or Lilium mackliniae, is the State Flower of Manipur found only in the upper ranges of Shirui Hills in Ukhrul district of Manipur at an elevation of 5,568 – 8,500 ft. above sea level. It was first discovered by English botanist Kingdon F Ward in 1946 and named it ‘Lilium mackliniae’ after the maiden name of his wife Jean Macklin and later introduced to the world by bagging the prestigious merit prize in the 1948 Royal Horticultural Society Flower in London. Shirui Lily Festival is an annual five-day State festival celebrated in Ukhrul district to spread awareness about the endangered state flower ‘Shirui Lily’ as well as to promote Ukhrul district as a potential tourist destination in Manipur. The festival was celebrated by the locals in their own level till 2016, when the State Government in 2017 declared that Shirui Lily festival would be celebrated in state level.

Rediscovering Bishnupur District

Bishnupur district is one of the 16 districts of Manipur and became a full-fledged district on May 25, 1983. The district headquarter is located 27 kms away from state capital Imphal. It is bounded by Imphal West district in the north, Churachandpur district on the south, Imphal in its east and Thoubal district in the west.
